Providing nutritious supplemental meals to kids and families

In 2023 we launched a weekend food program for preschool children along with Bread and Broth. Together, we’re serving 70 children ages 18 months-5 years old at five child care centers serving low income families. These weekend bags contain 7 single serving meals, fruit, vegetables, and snacks. The demand for this program is increasing and we’d like to help expand this to reach 100-150 families.

We will match all donations to FEED to make sure every child in our community gets the food need to live healthy vibrant lives!

““I’m a single parent and the food we receive for the weekends is a blessing. When my child receives her bag, she gets excited to see what’s inside. Thank you so much!”

Your donations will

  • Provide weekend food support to all preschool families in need in our community

  • Create volunteer opportunities for the broader community to learn about food insecurity and help bag and deliver food

  • Create an open-source online volunteer and food donation platform for Bread & Broth that we can eventually offer to all organizations in Tahoe working in food insecurity

  • Create a working group of organizations in Tahoe and El Dorado County working to address hunger. This will be a learning circle with the goal of identifying gaps and opportunities

  • Did you know, there's a gap in preschool food support?

Over 45% of children in South Lake Tahoe qualify for free and reduced lunch at school, and preschoolers were identified as “gap” area for high need of nutritious food support (2019 Bread & Broth Assessment)

  • Nutritious food at a young age has a huge impact

Children who do not receive nutritious food as they develop can suffer from physical ailments such as obesity, osteoporosis, irritability, and lack of focus and attention

  • It can change a child's life

“A great deal of the brain’s ultimate structure and capacity is shaped early in life before the age of 3 years…Failure to optimize brain development early in life appears to have long-term consequences with respect to education, job potential, and adult mental health.” (The Role of Nutrition in Brain Development: The Golden Opportunity of the First 1000 days)

Our Vision

We envision a food system in our region that works collaboratively to distribute food to those kids and families in need in the most effective way possible using technology and an army of volunteers
